What you will find
MSW landfills 923
Takes household and commercial solid waste for permanent disposal.
C&D landfills 1,629
Takes construction and demolition debris — wood, drywall, roofing, concrete. Usually cheaper per ton than an MSW landfill, and usually will not take household trash.
Transfer stations 4,020
Consolidates loads for haul-out to a regional landfill. Closer to town than the landfill, so a shorter round trip, but tipping fees run higher.

How to use a tipping fee
The rate is only half the cost
A transfer station ten minutes away at $78 a ton often beats a landfill forty minutes away at $46. Run the round trip, the driver's hour and the fuel before you decide the cheap gate is cheap.
Separate the load where it pays
Clean concrete, clean wood and scrap metal each have their own gate and their own price — sometimes a credit instead of a charge. Mixed into an MSW load they all tip at the MSW rate.
Watch the minimum
Most sites charge a minimum regardless of weight. A half-full 10 yard can cost the same as a full one, which is an argument for the bigger container, not the smaller.

Gate hours, what a site will take that day, tarp rules and whether they take cash all change. Every page here lists the scale house number for exactly that reason.
